Mowing

Today Les put a new filter and spark plug into the lawn mower and I tackled the back yard.  We didn't finish any too soon because the clouds built up and we have a gentle thunderstorm grumbling overhead right now.

My point is that the season is running about two weeks early.

By my own observation, I see that the summer follows the winter.  Now before you say "Duh!!", what I mean is that if the winter is warm, the summer will be hot.  If the winter is wet, the summer will be too.  And so on.  I use August fogs to predict the winter and the winter to predict the summer.

I'm predicting a hot, wet summer this year.  I've been saying that since January.  So far, my prediction is being borne out.  We'll see as the months pass.

Noticing

I notice things that most people don't.  I'm not sure why I do and most don't, but I like what happens inside of me when I make connections.

I notice when the night goes out of the air in the morning.  Something changes in the atmosphere - maybe the humidity or that one degree of temperature.  Suddenly, it isn't early morning anymore.  It's full day.

When I was cleaning the backyard this morning, I found a violet and a dandelion.  I also saw a robin.  That combined with nippy air made me feel springy instead of almost winter.

A couple of the years since I've been in southern Indiana, the robins stayed all winter.  Those were mild winters. Last year, the robins disappeared around November 4th.  We had 13 snows.  Smart birds to get out of here before that all fell!  I will note when I stop seeing them this year.

Noticing weather patterns is one of my favorite things to do.  I was counting the fogs in August.  While I marked about 8 fogs, one of my coworkers, who travels through more open areas to get to work, said she's counted one for almost every day of the month.  I guess we'll see who comes out closer.

Fog

This morning, it's either foggy or very, VERY humid.  In my opinion, it's both.

There's a bit of weather lore that I have to remind myself of before August 1st.  I need to count the fogs in August.  That will tell me how many snows there will be this winter.  Last year, we had a very foggy August with 13 fogs.  Not all of them were clamp-down, can't-see-anything fogs.  Most of them were just really thick air.

Once we got into November, I started counting the snowfalls - anything measurable.  It started snowing around Thanksgiving and pretty much didn't stop until the end of March.  There were 13 measurable snows.  The last couple weren't much, but they were enough to count.

After Christmas, the school kids didn't attend a complete week of school until well into February.  Boy, did they have snow days to make up!

So now I've reminded myself before the month of August begins.  I'll mark my calendar all month so I have an accurate count.

Anyone want to try it out for themselves?  Will it work where you live?
