Finished Afghan

I mentioned to you a few posts ago that I was trying to finish an afghan by the end of July.

Well, it's done and ready to go to its new home.

Just my opinion, but I think it came out okay.

Parting Gift

One of our summer interns at the library is leaving us on Monday to return to college. He's worked for us in Information Services for two summers now and I hate the day he leaves. I honestly don't know how we get along without him the rest of the year.

Anyway, we were trying to think of something we could give him for a parting gift to show our appreciation.

If you know me at all, you know that I suggested that I crochet an afghan. I honestly didn't know if I could turn out a whole afghan in three days since my arm works pretty well now, but I haven't pushed it that hard and that repetitively since March.

I had yesterday off. I took some ibuprofen and picked up the crochet hook. The long and the short of it is that I crocheted for 12 hours yesterday (with a few breaks for eating and walking the dogs). The blanket was finished except for a couple of rows to finish either end by 11 pm.

And here it is. Ready to be gifted.

My Current Project

After I finished the baby blanket, I tried an experimental pattern which failed miserably. I only had to spend about an hour on that one to find out it wasn't going to work.

So I started on something that requires nothing but straight lines and some counting to get the lines in the right place.

Here's where I am so far on that blanket.

 

This blanket is a bit over 6 feet long, so you are only seeing part of the work.

 

I'm agonizing over whether I should submit this to a traditional publisher or write up another ebook. My dilemma is that many ereaders don't have the capacity to display color photos.  My other issue is that, while I know there are other people doing this craft, only one has posted the old patterns which she distributes when someone asks, and a convent that sells the finished afghans out of their gift shop.

 

This begs the question of just how technologically savvy are the people who do this. Should I assume they have ereaders at all, or am I better off trying to sell hard copy books and figure a lot of copies will go to libraries?

 

I'd be happy to hear any opinions.

Finished Afghan

This afghan nears 7 feet across.  Here it is across a double bed.

Phew!  I'm glad it's finished!  The last couple of rounds were each about 21 feet of double crochet.  I'll be glad of it this winter.

Work in Progress

Here's the afghan I'm working on at the moment.  It's a round afghan with only 12 increases per round.  You have no idea how fast that adds up!  A five-band color is 48 stitches bigger on the fifth round than it was on the first one. That doesn't seem like a lot in the beginning, but I'm up to about 16 feet per round at the outer edge and still growing.

I want to add about 12 more rounds bringing the diameter to 6 feet and the circumference to about 19 feet of crocheting.

I'm finishing it with increasingly darker blues to make a sunburst design.

Pinwheel Shawl

I started this one as an afghan, but since I am a slow knitter at best, I thought I would make it into a shawl.  Someone in hospice will be happy with it.

I also finished weaving an afghan with yarn through a mesh fabric.  I can't post that one yet as it is a Christmas present to one of my family.  Shh! don't tell.

There's plenty more to come.
